Taipei City and Los Angeles became sister cities 47 years ago. Taipei City Mayor Wan-An Chiang met today with Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Dilpreet Sidhu, who visited Taipei City to participate in the 2026 Taipei International Cities Forum and the Smart City Summit & Expo. During the meeting, Mayor Chiang playfully remarked that the duration of the sister-city relationship between Taipei City and Los Angeles matched his age, noting that this nearly half-century partnership has borne witness to the shared growth of the two cities.

Deputy Mayor Sidhu congratulated Mayor Chiang on the successful conclusion of the Taipei International Cities Forum earlier that morning and expressed strong admiration for Taipei City’s achievements in integrating artificial intelligence into municipal services. She also noted her intention to apply Taipei City’s successful experiences to Los Angeles and shared the current policy priorities of the Los Angeles city government, as well as the preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Mayor Chiang expressed his sincere admiration for the ability of Los Angeles to host such premier international events.
In the areas of economic and educational development, Mayor Chiang noted that Taipei City is actively promoting its Global Pass initiative in collaboration with multiple international cities. He expressed his hope for this initiative to facilitate exchanges with startup teams in Los Angeles and establish a platform for resource sharing by young entrepreneurs from both cities. In addition, Mayor Chiang proposed strengthening reciprocal visits and cooperation in higher education to facilitate the free flow of talent between the two major technological hubs.
The meeting was relaxed and cordial. Deputy Mayor Sidhu warmly invited Mayor Chiang to visit Los Angeles in person and suggested that they attend a Dodgers game together during his visit.

After the meeting, the two sides exchanged commemorative gifts. Mayor Chiang presented Deputy Mayor Sidhu with a handcrafted wooden music box featuring Taipei 101, symbolizing the city’s welcome through one of its most iconic landmarks. In return, Deputy Mayor Sidhu presented a commemorative item from the Getty Center, a major art museum in Los Angeles. She remarked that although the Getty Center had previously faced threats from wildfires, it continues to stand resilient under careful protection, and she used this resilience as a metaphor to express her hope that the friendship between the two cities will endure.
