Taipei City and the city of Dallas in the United States became sister cities in 1996, and 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of this relationship. Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Jesse Moreno led a delegation to Taipei to participate in the 2026 Taipei International Cities Forum and the Smart City Summit & Expo, demonstrating the strong ties developed between the two cities over more than a quarter century. To commemorate this milestone, Taipei City Mayor Wan-An Chiang presented Mayor Pro Tem Moreno with a 30th anniversary commemorative plaque during their meeting that symbolized the two cities’ joint commitment to another three decades of collaboration in AI-driven development, net-zero sustainability, and technological governance.

The meeting was marked by a warm and lively atmosphere. Upon learning that Mayor Chiang is a fan of the Dallas Mavericks, Mayor Pro Tem Moreno presented him with an official Mavericks cap as a commemorative gift. This gesture demonstrated that the close ties between the two cities extend beyond political and economic collaboration to include shared interests in culture and sports.

During the meeting, Mayor Chiang observed that the Comprehensive Environmental and Climate Action Plan and Responsible AI Integration initiative presented by Mayor Pro Tem Moreno at the forum earlier that morning (March 19th) were closely aligned with Taipei’s initiatives promoting an AI-driven smart city and its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. He noted that both cities share a consistent vision with regard to technological governance.
Speaking approvingly of Dallas’s business environment, Mayor Chiang noted that the city is one of the fastest-growing major cities in the United States, noting its success in attracting leading enterprises. In response, Mayor Pro Tem Moreno expressed appreciation for Taipei City’s warm invitation and emphasized that their joint appearance at the International Cities Forum signified a transition toward deeper exchanges between the two cities.

Mayor Pro Tem Moreno stated that direct flights between Taiwan and Dallas have been established, and that this “air bridge” has significantly enhanced the connections between the two locations. He emphasized that Dallas is a highly livable city characterized by low tax rates, a safe residential environment, and strong economic vitality. The city is particularly attractive to young people and offers abundant opportunities for development.

Before the conclusion of the meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Moreno formally extended an invitation to Mayor Chiang to visit Dallas, expressing his hope for Mayor Chiang to experience the city’s vitality and potential. Mayor Chiang conveyed his appreciation and expressed his expectation that the two cities will pursue more comprehensive and substantive cooperation in the future to extend their 30-year friendship.
