Taipei City Mayor Wan-An Chiang met with Mayor Pablo Cawich of Belmopan, the capital of Belize, today along with the mayor’s spouse and members of his delegation, including Belize’s Ambassador to Taiwan, Katherine Meighan. Mayor Chiang expressed his sincere appreciation to Mayor Cawich for traveling to Taipei to participate in the 2026 Taipei International Cities Forum and the Smart City Summit & Expo. He emphasized that this visit, which is Mayor Cawich’s second since his visit in March of last year, demonstrates the strong and enduring friendship underpinning the sister-city relationship between the two capitals.

During the meeting, Mayor Chiang remarked that the strong relationship between the two cities lies in their people. Noting that both he and Mayor Cawich are fathers of three children, he observed that they share common perspectives on family and the upbringing of the next generation. At present, Mayor Cawich’s two sons are studying and working in Taipei, serving as living examples of the close ties between the two cities. Mayor Chiang expressed his desire to strengthen educational exchanges and encourage more outstanding young individuals from Belmopan to pursue studies and training in Taipei.

Mayor Cawich responded warmly, stating that his return visit had allowed him to gain a deeper appreciation of Taiwan’s culture and cuisine, both of which reinforced his sense of the familial bond between the two cities. He also expressed his gratitude for the donation of firefighting equipment provided by the Taipei City Government, noting that a shipment had been arranged and is currently en route to Belize.
Concerning urban governance, the two mayors reached a consensus, identifying smart city development and artificial intelligence applications as their central priorities. Mayor Cawich acknowledged that Belmopan is limited in its resources and technology and expressed his hope that Taipei City could provide assistance and share its practical experience.
Mayor Chiang indicated his willingness to share information and resources, and both sides discussed the potential of civil servant and technological exchanges. Mayor Cawich also extended a cordial invitation for Mayor Chiang to visit Belmopan at a later date to expand municipal cooperation through on-site observation and direct exchanges.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides exchanged commemorative gifts. Mayor Chiang presented a premium Taiwanese whisky as a gift for Mayor Cawich, showcasing Taiwan’s refined alcohol-making techniques, and Mayor Cawich presented a custom-engraved book cover in return, bringing the meeting to a warm and successful conclusion.
